Today is Wednesday- I arrived in DC (or Arlington, VA) on Sunday- I get furniture on Friday. So far I have signed up for power (and waited on hold), attempted to sign up for water (they keep disconnecting me, so who knows if our water will be turned off), had issues with exactly who will be living in my house (one girl just got into med school and might be replaced by another girl… and her boyfriend… and his friend), tried to walk to the metro (its too far), checked out the neighborhood (more on that later), figured out my hours for my job that starts next week and joined the gym. The area I live in is South Arlington and is quite… umm heterogeneous. My young Caucasian female self and my roommates are quite the minority. Except for the guys who live next door who resemble frat boys. Apparently they have loud parties, which could be good as long as we are invited to them. I met them as I returned from a walk that turned into a sprint since my car alarm was going off and they were all standing around my jeep looking at it figuring out how to make it stop. Hello neighbors… ugg.
My only mode of communication so far has been my cell phone, which yesterday decided that it wouldn’t charge and wouldn’t turn off… thus no communication. Verizon is on strike, so our “land line” won’t be in until the end of August. Luckily I have this week to figure out things, so I got my phone fixed (though I still don’t trust it) and have spent quality time at Target (buying stuff and a toaster, returning toaster cause it was broken, getting new toaster). So far I have gotten lost less than I was expecting (very surprising) and have been ok with sleeping on an Aerobed (that likes to deflate partially overnight). I am feeling a lot like an adult with all these responsibilities and such, which I think was the point to me moving down here. I did go to the mall though (and had my watch, which had stopped that morning, fixed while I was there), and shopped around a bit which reminded me a lot of home.
Well, most of the craziness of moving in should be settled in the next few days, and maybe I will meet my new new roommates sometime soon and see what they are like, and I start work next week which is exciting. This is my first weekend in DC too, which should be fun. I miss everyone who is not here in NoVa with me (and even those who are here, I miss you too cause my house is SO empty right now). Please come visit and I should have regular Internet connection soon!
Alanna
