Subject: Short interview with Mark Hamill in a German magazine

Last week in the German Magazine "Stern" (= Star"), there was a short Interview with Mark Hamill in the column "People today". I thought you might be interested in it. I tried to translate it as good as possible. I hope you can read what I translated. If you see mistakes (which I certainly have done), please be nice and don't be angry about it. :D

Have fun reading!
Yubby yubby yub!

What does Mark Hamill do?

The man from California played the part of the young space hero Luke Skywalker in the first three adventures of the Star Wars-Saga. With this he became one of the most well known actors of movie history.
Mark Hamill in the W-Hotel in Westwood, L.A. The fifty-year old lives with his wife Marilou and his three children in the Californian Malibu. The son of a marine officer played part in lots of TV series when finishing the actors academy bvor George Lucas gave him the role of Luke Skywalker in the movie „Star Wars“ in 1977. After the two sequels „The Empire strikes back“ and „The Return of the Jedi“ Hamill worked mainly on the stage in a threatre and lended his voice to many characters of animated TV series or viedeo games. Recently he had a guest role in Kevin Smith’s comedy „Jay and Silent Bob strike back“, which will be released in the German cinemas next spring.

Q.: Does Luke Skywalker still play an important part in your life?
A.: Not really. The exception is Halloween: Then every year lots of small children disguised asLuke Skywalker ring my door bell and try to intimidate me with their lightsabers. I always free myself when I give them sweets. It’s funny when they disguise their voices and say before leaving: „May the force be with you.“

Q.: Don’t you think this kind of cult is amazing?
A.: Absolutely. This “Star Wars“-hysteria seems to be inherit generation after generation. Today, 8-year-old children tell me details of my part that I already forgot completely. That’s a real phenomenon – at this time theirs parents still were children themselves. The movies have become timeless like the music of the Beatles.

Q.: Have you ever thought the movies would become such great success?
A.: It was more the opposite: Durin the shooting of the movie we thought from time to the time the film could became a great flop. Alec Guinness would have liked to cancell his part to play Obi-Wan Kenobi. He was afraid people would redicule and laugh at him because he played in a movie where apes could fly space ships.

Q.: After Star Wars you weren’t seen on the screen very often. Did Luke Skywalker ruin your career?
A.: I had problems because people only thought me as an action hero. Shortly after when I got the the part of the stage play „The Elephant Man“ on Broadway in New York, nobody believed that I could manage with it.. After the premiere I got very good critiques and more stage offers. But for the organizers it was strange that from time to time there were guests coming with flashing lightsabers.

Q.: Your former partner Harrison Ford is one of the best-paid acters in the business. Do you envy him a bit?
A.: No, I think he earned ervery penny. I’m very happy, and I have enough money to live a comfortable life. From the money I earned with Star Wars I bought a house in Malibu, where we are – my wife Marilou and our three children – still living. A family without problems is very seldom in Hollywood. That’s much more important for we than millions of dollars on my bank account.

Q.: How are you earning your money today?
A.: I lend my voice to comic series like Batman and Spiderman. From time to time I have small guest roles in some movies. Recently, I have played the comic character Cock-Knock in director Kevin Smith’s movie...

Q.: A Cock-Knocker is someone who hits others in their genitals....
A.: Yeah, that’s right. And I’m fighting with a lightsaber. It’s in the style of Luke Skywalker. But don’t ask me what a work it was till George Lucas’ movie film gave the permission to make this parody. Because of a contract with Lucasfilm I’ve have very strict limits. Even the colour of Luke Skywalker’s laser (addition from Wicket: I think he talks of the lightsabers’ colours, not of the lasers!) has a copyright. Do you remember with colour Luke’s laser had?

Q.: Hmmmm... red?
A.: No, Dath Vader’s was red, mine was green. Look, so fast you get a claimt about millions in court. If I would make a Skywalker-parody with a joint in my hand or as a porno actor today, then I would have to go to jail immidiately. Although that would be funny, a porno Luke with teh text: „Do you want to see my laser, baby?“
