Subject: White and deafness...an interesting angle.

I am posting this for everyone to review. Just something to add to your secision making process when forming opinions about the white controversey.

I went to a Jack Russell trail and show this weekend and was interested when I overherd someone talking about taking their dog over to the BEAR test. Well, I found out that has nothing to do with a varmint. It's a hearing test! They put electrodes into the dogs skin around the head and send noise pulses into the dogs ear to test its hearing. Apparently, because of the high degree of white in the breed, there is a rather high indicy of deafness. This BEAR test costs $35 and up for each dog.

I talked with the veterinarian for quite some time about all of this and I have a new view on this issue as it pertains to the leopard curs. I will be doing more research on this in the next few days and will get back to you all with any new info that I find.

I have been on the fence on this issue as you all know from my posts. I would like to go on record as being in favor of reducing the amount of white in the breed whatever the inconvenience. To date, I have been culling all pups that get anywhere close to 1/3 white and I will continue to do that at the very least. I am certainly not telling anyone else what to do but this is something all breeders should be aware of. Hope this helps. Dan McD.
