Subject: Randy and the Merle debate...

Randy is not saying that folks can not breed one marle dog to another. He has done that himself and will tell you that. Some of the dogs from such a mating will be merle dogs, some not merle at all, and some double merle. Those that are double merle (genetically speeking) are easy to spot. Those dogs that have a great amount of white, especially those that express that white out into their backs (not ring necks, I mean out into the actual back of the dog), along with the white-eyed dogs (to include those that have a small amoount of white in part of one or both eyes) are easily identified as being true double merle dogs. When we say double merle it does not refer to the simple fact that both perents were merle dogs. It refers to those dogs that picked up the merle gene from both sides. Whenever it is there, it expresses itself. There can be pups in a liter that are out of two merle parents that are geneticaly...not double merle. This is obviously for the folks newer to the breed. I thought it would be a good time to post this for anyone new to the scene that is trying to make sense of this stuff. Hope it helped. Take Care, Dan
