My wife and I attended his Town Meeting last evening at JCCC. We were there with perhaps 200 others.

I thought the man conducted himself quite well, and seemed to be quite at home talking one on one with the citizens, which was the entire evening (questions and answers). It was supposed to be 90 minutes, but lasted 2 1/2 hours. He stayed long enough to allow everyone who wanted to ask a question to do so.

Several people clearly came prepared for the occasion, and were quite articulate and showed a level of intelligence that is all too rare nowadays. The subject matter covered the gamut, from the Oz project to international affairs. Perhaps the most revealing moment came when Mr. Roberts aired his thoughts about the Jim Jeffords defection. He was one who tried hard to keep Mr. Jeffords from doing what he did, and was clearly disappointed in the results.

No one got heated, and there were no ugly incidents. Mr. Roberts was very much a gentleman, and the people in turn were properly respectful and courteous. This was a great picture of what democracy OUGHT to be -- an informed people connecting with their representative in government.

Several in the audience came to tell their long sad tale of woe about how the government abused them. Clearly, it is a problem, as misinformed workers in the IRS or the Social Security Administration (or elsewhere) are quite capable of destroying a person, and not feel any retribution for it. Even if the person wins his case in court, the damage is already done and little recourse is available -- except to come to your Congressman and make a complaint. Mr. Roberts took note of each case and asked his staff members there to get with the person and get enough details on paper to allow him to follow up. As he said several times "That is what I am here for".

I'm betting he will do it again sometime. I invite you to come out next time and just listen in, or let your voice be heard. Just be prepared if you want to ask a question as you will find many others will be so prepared. The Senator said to several people "Just be careful what you ask for!" His theme seemed to be "You may think you are entitled to something from the government, but you are also entitled to pay for it."

Could not have said it better myself.
