Before they started building the Interstates, the 50's as noted by Liza, they probably date from the 30's.

They took them down as they couldn't be appreciated at the high speeds we travel today, and probably for other silly reasons only a Federal agency could come up with.

You could probably see them on the older highways until the 70's, I can remember finding them in the late 60's.
