Kansas City had its greatest trial by water 50 years ago.

Seems so long ago, as it was just 8 years ago I watched the water rise step by step up the hill toward the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. 66 steps from riverside up the hill to the Arch, and the river maxed out covering 34 of them Aug. 3rd.

47 years ago, 112 degrees here, hottest July day on record.

St. Louis had their hottest day EVER the next day (July 14, 1954) as it reached 114. I lived through that day in that pre-air conditioning era. I recall waking up at 9 AM (I was in junior high, summer vacation) and it was already over 100. We really did fry eggs on the sidewalk, used a lot of water to stay cool. Things inside the house were hot to the touch, and we slept outside. I don't recall a lot of people dying of heat prostration, since in those days, very few had air conditioning, so we were used to it. Besides, we weren't afraid to open the windows, or to sleep outside.
