Cranston's mother was never shown on the show. I was told by a rabid SB fan that Cranston was a last-minute replacement for Joel Crothers' character Jack Lee (who was Kirk's father). Jack Lee was actually slated to be the only to come between Cruz and Eden, but Crothers' death forced the writers to come up with another avenue - hence, the sudden appearence of Jack's illigetimate son. I have no idea if this is true.
