Both the BMF and MAG are celebrating a delay in the introduction of the new motorcycle test, but warn this is a respite.

Originally scheduled for September 29, the new motorcycle test will now be introduced on Monday, March 30, 2009. MAG Campaigns Manager, David Short said"This is a long-overdue victory for common sense and shows the combined voice of all the motorcycle interest groups can bring about real change in official policy."

Because of the new test requirements, the existing 260 test centres will be closed, to be replaced by just 66 new Multi Purpose Test Centres (MPTCs) around the UK – which could have meant learners having to ride up to 60 miles to take their test.

The BMF are calling for provisions to be made so that no learner is more than 20 miles away from a test centre. MAG are looking at a different tactic. David Short "I am hopeful that the delay will allow further progress to be made on the development of the ‘casual site’ on the Isle of Wight, which MAG has been campaigning to retain. If this is achieved we will have a model which could be applied throughout the UK".

Fitting the above model would be a proposal being negotiated with Oxford United Football Club, who supported a move to make use of their carpark as a temporary test centre during the week.
