Date Posted: 05:31:36 09/06/07 Thu The BMF has withdrawn support for road safety lobby group RoadPeace, following their proposal to the Commons Transport Select Committee that motorcycles be ‘downsized in ‘weight, power and speed’. Cancelling their membership, BMF BMF Government Relations Executive Chris Hodder said ‘Now that you (RoadPeace) have attacked motorcycling yet again with ill-conceived and ill-informed arguments, you have driven us to withdraw our support for your organisation’ RoadPeace has – erroneously – called for the above action due to their misguided beliefs that this will reduce accident rates. As the BMF stated, the majority of motorcycle accidents happen to riders of low-powered motorcycles and scooters with a capacity of less than 125cc – and a Transport Laboratory report in 2004 concluded there is no direct link between engine capacity and accidents. RoadPeace also claim that a reduction in engine size will reduce CO2 – completely missing the point that modern bikes generate less CO2 than the average new car, let alone that bikes are more fuel-efficient as they can keep moving when other vehicles are gridlocked. As BMF Spokesman Jeff Stone said: “The BMF is represented on numerous transport and road safety committees and joined RoadPeace some years ago in order to contribute to the road safety debate and help gain a better understanding of motorcycling issues. This is one of those rare cases where it sadly hasn’t worked.” [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
