Date Posted: 06:43:23 11/02/07 Fri A motorcycle instructor has called for the Isle of Wight to be given special dispensation when the new test procedure is introduced. A requirement of the new procedures is that evasive and braking manoeuvres must be performed at 50kph – around 31/32mph. This exceeds the speed limit, causing the need for specialist test centres that can accommodate this. Any bikers living on the Isle of Wight who want to take their test would have to travel to the mainland – increasing their costs as well as disadvantaging them as they would have to perform the test on unfamiliar roads. Ron Wallis, of the IW Motorcycle Club Training Scheme said “Normally when we are preparing someone for a final test we take them to the test centre and show them where they will need to go on the day because the test itself is stressful enough without having to worry about that.” “We would not be able to do that in future and if a pupil wants to visit the centre they will have to do so at great cost.” “I plan to ask the ministry if they will subsidise the extra costs faced by Islanders but I doubt it” added Mr Wallis, who also asked if dispensation could be given to test pupils on designated stretches of road. “The test centre could be adjacent to a quiet road that could be closed one or two days a week for testing,” suggested Mr Wallis.
