Date Posted: 05:24:47 11/07/07 Wed Local bikers have reacted angrily to “reactionary” police suggestions that bikes should be banned from Snowdonia. Chief Superintendent Geraint Anwyl said it was time to debate whether they (bikes) should be banned from national parks, following the death of two bikers. Local bikers have pointed out these were the first in Snowdonia this year, and have called for a more proactive approach. Chief Spt Anwyl said the deaths were “of great concern” and part of “an emerging trend” of motorcyclists riding quickly through national parks. He added: “My personal view is that we have reached a stage now where we need to have a debate over should we be looking at prohibiting motorcycles from our National Parks? Or should we consider introducing by-laws, legislation which bans motorcycles from the National Park at certain times of the year?” “The police have been most proactive promoting initiatives such as Bikesafe and other quality driver improvement schemes to improve knowledge and skills. We will continue to promote Bikesafe and engage with the motorbike community. However we will also use covert tactics in order to enforce the law.” Alan Shepherd, of A&D Motorcycles in Denbigh – a member of the North Wales Motorcycle Alliance – countered “If a ban came in, I know of several police officers who wouldn’t be able to get to work.” “The police have not been at all proactive over this, but very reactionary. It is a very statistic-driven force, and I am sure this bad month has messed up their stats. The police are very proactive when it comes to finding solutions to the drug problem.
