Date Posted: 05:29:42 11/23/07 Fri The Department for Transport has launched a new rating scheme for motorcycle helmets. In a world first, the Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (SHARP) will give an independent rating from 1 to 5 stars of how much protection a helmet will give in an impact, based on how well they perform in DfT-commissioned lab tests. Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: "Our research indicates that even though all helmets have to reach a minimum legal standard, safety performance can vary by as much as 30%.” Mr Fitzpatrick also announced the launch of the Driving Standards Agency's Enhanced Rider Scheme, which should provide for insurance discounts for riders who pass the test.
