Date Posted: 05:30:48 11/23/07 Fri The family of the biker whose images were shown without permission called once again for the resignation of controversial North Wales chief constable Richard Brunstrom. An investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) concluded Brunstrom had not broken any laws, but the matter could have been avoided. Brunstrom - who has apologised to the family - admitted to the North Wales Police Authority that he had been “stupid” and had “made a mistake” after showing the images at a press briefing without the family’s consent. Brunstrom was censured by the Authority, who also apologised to the family over the incident and promised to work with the chief to improve protocols for dealing with the media. Family solicitor Paul Beck said, “We are grateful for the apology and sympathy extended to the Gibney family by North Wales Police Authority – but the very fact they were put in a position where they had to say sorry speaks volumes about the behaviour and judgment of chief constable Richard Brunstrom.” “The family is disappointed the authority did not see fit to remove Mr Brunstrom from his post.” “They note that on previous occasions the chief constable has breached protocol and there is little comfort in his reassurance that he will not do so again.” Speaking about Brunstrom’s blaming the media for the furore (the images were never intended to be shown publicly, only at a specially-organised media event), Mr Beck added “The family find it hard to accept Mr Brunstrom’s belated apology. He seems determined to blame the media rather than accept sole responsibility.” “He personally selected the photographs. In our view, the honourable course of action would be for him to tender his resignation.” Anglesey MP Albert Owen has also called for Brunstrom to resign. The Labour MP told BBC Wales's Politics Show that Richard Brunstrom is "out of control" and controversy surrounding him overshadows the work of the police. He added "I think it's very difficult for the police to do their work now because the attention is always on the chief constable and his actions with the media rather than the important work the police authorities and police across Wales do.” "North Wales is attracting attention for the wrong reasons." Brunstom has said he would show pictures of a decapitated biker again - if "safeguards" were in place, including making sure the family did not suffer.
