The BMF has welcomed Cambridgeshire County Council’s outline plans to exempt motorcycles from congestion charging schemes.

The Council’s proposed scheme will operate during the weekday morning peak, charging all road users (except motorcycles and scooters) within the Cambridge urban area between £3 and £5 (the actual charge being dependent on how the user interacts with the scheme).

Cambridgeshire is the first of the second wave (London and Durham were in the first wave) of local authorities proposing a congestion charge to specifically exclude motorcycles from any charging regime.

In welcoming the exemption, the BMF’s Government Relations Executive Chris Hodder said: “It’s good to see Cambridge setting the scene. Road pricing should be about reducing congestion, not simply revenue collection and as motorcycles and scooters do not contribute to congestion; do not cause wear and tear on road surfaces; produce less greenhouse gases than other vehicles and don’t require massive parking facilities, exemption is the sensible route to follow.”
