Date Posted: 05:31:07 01/23/07 Tue A number of BMW motorcycles were amongst the treasure-trove removed by more than 200 scavengers in Devon, as the cargo of stricken container ship MSC Napoli washed ashore. The container ship was abandoned by its crew after being holed during storms and deliberately run aground to stop it from sinking. Gareth Topping, 32, from Sidmouth, helped himself to a 1200cc BMW motorbike worth £9,095 but filled in a form before taking it away " I saw about 30 BMW bikes all boxed up, in pretty good nick” he said. "We're not stopping people because we've got no powers to do so," a Devon & Cornwall Police spokesman said, as Officers handed out leaflets explaining that they must report anything they find to the authorities Under the Merchant Shipping Act, salvage remains the property of the original owner. Anyone who finds washed up goods must contact a government official, called the receiver of the wreck, within 28 days or face being charged with theft.
