The third increase in fuel duty – this time by 2p per litre – in nine months came into force from 1st September.

The government defended the increase, which pushes the average price of unleaded to £1.05 a litre, citing environmental pressures and supporting public finances. The latest raise – making a 23% increase in pump prices in 2009 – is in spite of the price of a barrel of crude oil dropping from $147 in July 2008 to $70 at current costs.
