p.j. all timber boats even way back when you where at sea always had raised deck structures.as in mast houses/ cranes/hatch coamings etc.this obviously was to ceate more deck space.for the timber deck cargo and for the crews to work around with more ease.to secure as you rightly say. we used bottle screws then with chains.or wire ropes.the difference is today who is it down to to secure and check that deck cargo such as timber is secure enough to sail.30 yrs ago a timber boat would never have sailed without the mate@bosun going over and over these lashings.i am suspect in this case that one the deck cleats welded to the deck that hold the stuff {shipbuilders} and i have to say the ability and the standard of the crews who man these ships to carry out such tasks or realise the importance of it.but will wait with interest as to what the failure is put down to.of course heavy seas dont help but they didnt back in our day either.one other thing i noticed strange the port lifeboat was available to the crew as she listed to port why wasnt it launched? if she had been in the south china sea in the middle of knowere without the aid of helecopter rescue would that crew have just gone down with her or took to the lifeboat? good point p.j.all the best for 2008. regards keep enjoying yourself mate terry{scouse}.
