Yes, they sometimes called it the "shed" That structure where people were using the gangway in the movie. There were ticket counters in there and so fourth where you would get your key, check in and so fourth. This is just like today. Everyone crowds in the shed and stands in lines. Then you check in,hand off your luggage to someone and board the ship through a gangway. Your luggage shows up at your door, or in your room sometime later. I have a picture of the interior of the Cunard shed in New York.
