the concept of marriage predates religion as we know it. Religion is a product of the evolution of man and furthermore, I disagree that marriage is a religious tie. The only way religion can factor into a marriage is if the parties so choose. Yes, religion factors into marriage but it is not the only factor in marriage or a contractual bonding of two individuals.

We should also keep in mind that religion is a tool for man throughout the ages. The rules and tenets of religion have always been manipulated by rulers, etc. for there own purposes.

As for the concept of divorce being unnatural. Those that believe that should invest in a history course or two; take a look at civilization throughout the ages and see that there was divorce, "strange" liasions for as long as man has been more civilized ... from the time man choose to leave the state of nature and form convenants amongst themselves. I'll stop now before I begin expounding Locke & Hobbes and Machiavelli.
