Subject: Southern Strategy

Less than a week after the greatest win in the history of the CCSU football program, the Blue Devils put everything on the line against the SCSU Owls. And by the way, just what was our potential reward supposed to be? Beating a Division II team? Most Connecticut residents still mistakenly perceive CCSU to be a Division II program. Last night’s narrow and perhaps costly victory did nothing to correct that misconception. For that to happen, we would have had to win the game by a score so lopsided that people would have mistaken it for a Lou Dobbs poll. Now CCSC vs. SCSC was a logical match up back in a time when the schedule included AIC, Univ.-Bridgeport (before Mr. Moon bought it), and Glassboro State (before Mr. Rowan donated enough money to get his name attached to it). Yes that was an idyllic time! Gas was 30 cents a gallon and Boone’s Farm Apple Wine was 95 cents a quart. But we are in the 21st century now. And our real rivals, for the time being anyway, are in Albany, Stony Brook, and West Long Branch. If we want a rivalry in New Haven, then it should be Yale. The Bulldogs still show an open date for September 15th, 2007. Playing in the newly refurbished Bowl would certainly be preferable to playing SCSU anywhere. If we can get out of next year’s game with the Owls, we should do it. And if Yale does not want the game, then there is always Harvard, Columbia, Fordham, etc, etc, etc. CCSU is now in the third decade of a struggle to get its athletic programs accepted as Division I/I-AA by both the public and the press. When that mission is finally accomplished, then maybe we could schedule some Division II opponents. At that point we would not have to worry about the repercussions from an occasional loss or close game. In the meantime, we cannot risk losing everything when there is nothing to win. Even Alan Gold wouldn’t make that bet.

In my opinion, CCSU will never be truely in the mind of ALL CT residents, when speaking of sports, as D-1 or a true athletic powerhouse until either of the following occur: CCSU men's basketball wins a game in the NCAA tourney, men's football wins against UCONN, or CCSU changes conferences soon - as the (possibility)reallignment of the AE/MAAC/NEC takes place. If you want to be associated as a "big boy," you have to run with them too. What this means is, heading to another conference that matches the school profile. In order to gain a HUGE amount of public support, which seems to be a major goal, the image of the athletics at CCSU must be boosted. - and playing SCSU does it no good (at this point in time). They have to pick with whom to associate themselves.
I also think that the programs should be marketed as well within Ct for obvious reasons. It's crazy that many CT newspapers, despite the recent GS FB win, minimally reported the story.
CCSU teams have more than proven themselves, they win. They win a lot. They win quality games. Year after year.
They have a strong, local/regional, loyal fan base.
Yet, the media generally downplays it all.
This is why the support is not state-wide unlike U _ _ _ N.

Seeing that there are 60k + alum in CT, with more and improved public relations and marketing,
maybe things will change a bit...soon.

Minimally reported in the Courant.... Like Section 2 page 13... just before the boxscores

[> interesting note -- stranger, 20:31:14 09/16/06 Sat

here is an interesting note. during the offseason (summertime), the athletics department requested more full-time positions, and all but one was approved by the higher ups. Guess which one.....marketing director. the department runs without someone in charge of marketing, and without someone full-time to handle promotions and ticketing. there is no marketing initiative because there is noone there to do it, and the tickets are run through the SID office. sounds like DI material to me.

good stuff! I agree we need more exposure and more $$$. We should come up with creative ways to assist the program. I noticed the website will soon have a feature "Blue Devils in the News." We do the best we can with what we have. We need more $$$! We have made tons of progress since the early 1990s, but much more can be done. I like the attitude we all have.

I think everyone is on the bandwagon that we need to join the New Englad/New York public universities in the America East Conference. This is home to many former Yankee Conference memebers, that UConn fans and locals will recognize!

Who do we need to lobby for a marketing manager? Dr. Miller, CSU BOT, someone else?

Finally, I know the SCSU game doesn't do much for us, but I'm in the minority as I like it. Think about this, what if UConn refused to play us becasue we are "inferior." Let's face it when CCSU/UConn plays in any sport it only helps us, not them. When the shoe is on the other foot it sucks. BTW - Southern is one of the top-10 DII athletic programs nationally. They have a great history and are our sister school. We shouldn't go on the road to play them, but in my mind the Owls are welcome to play us in New Britain in any sport at any time.

I agree totally with J.J. about playing Southern. I have been a Blue Devil fan for over 50 years. Southern has been our biggest rival for many many years. This is a big in state rivalry that should be continued. I remember in the 60's and early 70's when the whole Southern roster was made up of Connecticut players. Friday night, about half of their players still come from Connecticut. The coverage by the Hartford Courant of any other team other than UConn is an absolute joke! Until this year, even the New Britain Herald which is only two miles down the rode from Central was virtually non-existant on its football coverage. The areas high schools bot better coverage. This year, at least Matt Straub is making a good attempt to provide newspaper coverage. Central sport fans do a pretty good job of "preaching to the choir." Not enough! Get on the phone or email these sports writers and editors directly and complain........I do! Guess what? I never hear from any of them because I'm only one person and they think I'm nuts. However, if all of you who read and write on this forum do this then maybe something will happen. Fire up!

How about posting their contact info and we can get a constructive email campaign. (not flaming) Matt Straub feels like the only ally on the newspaper side.
