Date Posted: 09:26:11 06/20/03 Fri Kendo Kendo is a kind of East Asian martial arts with one or two swords. Since ancient times, a sword had been one of most powerful weapons until the early twentieth century. As the other countries, three Eastern countries, China, Korea and Japan, used the weapon and developed the way to use it. Finally, in the middle of the twentieth century, Japan made it into a sport, which is now called Kendo. The way to use a sword has been developed from very ancient times. However, during World War II, Japanese soldiers did many experiments in Manchuria, one of which was related with a sword. They killed many people with swords, and studied and reported where and what part of the human body were the easiest parts to cut. The parts became the point parts later. After WWII, some kendo instructors in Japan studied that reported again, and made some Kendo rules for sports Kendo. They decided on some valid point parts and now the parts are eight: three on the head, one on each hand, one on the neck and two on the torso. They also made many other rules. However, Kendo is a little bit different from other martial arts because the player uses a sword. Even if people use shinaies, bamboo swords, people think that the shinai is real and they kill the enemy or are killed. Moreover, they are very careful of their manners because they also think they have real swords and they can die. Kendo is becoming famous in the world not only because it is wonderful exercise but also because it has a strong, attractive and characteristic spirit. According to research, Kendo is one of the most calorie-consuming exercises, along with swimming and marathon. Moreover it is very good for making the respiratory organs strong and correcting body posture, and especially the backbone. Now, people from more than 45 countries practice Kendo and there is a world championship once every three years. In the U.S., there is also the United Stated American Kendo Association and several regional Kendo Associations, and there are several Kendo tournaments and championships.
