The bang in the carburettors is not unusual if you disrupt the mixture like that. Together with a sticking butterflyvalve there might be an airleak which causes the bang in the inlet.
If the rods which operate the throttle have a lot of play the valve might be out of center, thus leaking, causing the idle speed to be high. An overhaul is the best remedy to cure these problems.
Didn't you have the idle speed high problem before the bang, then the bang might have distorted the butterfly valve, or you might have air leak at another place (gasket)
