Nice to hear from you again, HRB! Thanks for the heads-up about Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde too, Jen. I probably would have overlooked it if you hadn't mentioned it. Did anybody else catch it? It's not one of my favorite "horror" stories (a little too realistic--a respectable gentleman experiments with drugs and turns into a murderer/rapist, battling his inner demons and bringing himself and those around him to ruin), so I was wondering why (1) it's considered such a Halloween classic and (2) why it's been remade yet *again*. However, John Hannah does a great job with the title roles, convincingly mild-mannered, altruistic, guilt-ridden, and tortured, alternating with hedonistic, menacing, and downright evil ... and, unlike previous versions of Mr. Hyde, with very minimal makeup. The moviemakers make great use of the latest FX technology, which I suppose makes it worth a remake. (I've never seen it, but my friend tells me John Hannah stars as a Scottish detective in the BBC series "Rebus." And I'm sure I'm not the only one who'll recognize him from "The Mummy," where he played the heroine's brother.)

Come to think of it, Jekyll/Hyde would've been a great role for David Warner, don't you think? Here, however, he plays yet another purely villainous role--an unscrupulous politician. (Hmm, maybe election season is the real occasion for this airing!) Fortunately, after Hannah, he gets probably the most screen time in the movie, and he gets to show another side of his personality in his memorable last scene.

Overall, I thought it was a well-made production. If you missed it, it's on again (in the U.S. at least) on Thursday, October 30, at 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 midnight and Friday the 31st at 4:00 on Bravo.

Hi and thanks for the review!
I saw a tiny bit with jump cuts of John Hannah looking all angsty. However we now have a big projection TV and I never want to see anything disturbing with the baby in the room because the faces are so huge.
I'll try to tape one of the Halloween transmissions.
I'm so tired of the J&H stuff because there have been so many spinoff versions as well. Mary Reilly was John Malkovich with combed versus mussy hair. Not a fave.
However if there's lots of DW then I have a reason to fast-forward through this one!
Yay!

Yes, it was pretty angsty--and pretty graphic too ... I definitely wouldn't watch it with the baby in the room!

BTW, I forgot to mention that DW gets to elicit some momentary sympathy around the middle of the film too . Alas, most of the visual portion of the scene seems to have been left on the cutting room floor.
