I'm new to this board--but not to David Warner! I 'rediscovered' him a couple weeks ago, thanks to--of all things--that episode of MST 3k that sent up 'Quest of the Delta Knights'.
I'd forgotten how much I enjoy watching him (even in sub-par films like that), and before you know it, I'm online looking for all things DW.
Judging from what I've seen on the board here, no one's posted in a while, but I thought I'd say hello, anyway--it's always nice to find like-minded people with exceptional taste. ;D

For you Londoners or anyone lucky enough to be visiting on 9th or 29th of December, you can catch one of David Warner's funniest performances on the big screen (ah, to fall out of my theatre seat with tears streaming from my eyes all over again when he accidentally obliterates one of his servants with a stray zap of his finger, then so casually apologizes and goes on with his tirade) ... It's playing at the BFI's National Film Theatre as part of their "Somewhere" season, which also includes another of my favorites, "a glorious digital restoration" of "The Wizard of Oz." (According to the BFI blurb, "All the films in this season have in common a vividly imagined creation of an alternative inner universe.")

"Time Bandits" will be shown Saturday 9 December at 3.10 p.m. at the NFT2 and Friday the 29th at 8.40 p.m. at NFT3

According to a BBC press release (www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/ stories/2005/03_march/16/bbctwo_part2.pdf), David Warner will be appearing in a new comedy series set to start this season. Here is the description:

"SENSITIVE SKIN
Suddenly it's sexy to be 60, in this dark comedy starring Joanna Lumley and Denis Lawson. Sensitive Skin looks at life through the eyes of a successful couple living in metropolitan London. Al and Davina Jackson struggle with sexual temptation and professional jealously and try to cope with their fear of the future. Al is a pundit for a broadsheet newspaper and is paid to find imperfection in everything; Davina works in an art gallery and is paid to make life more beautiful. But being 60 isn't simple. The couple's 30-year-old son, Orlando, refuses to acknowledge adulthood, while Davina's sister, Veronica, and her husband, Roger, intimidate the Jacksons with their confident and controlled grasp of life. Davina is played by Joanna Lumley, Al by Denis Lawson, Orlando by James Lance, Roger by Nicholas Jones and Veronica by Maggie Steed. Frances de la Tour, David Warner and Sir Jonathan Miller also star.
Sensitive Skin is written, produced and directed by Hugo Blick (Marion & Geoff/Up In Town)."

Unfortunately, it's not clear whether DW will be a regular or a guest star. Hopefully it's the former! Now if we could just get the series over here in the U.S. ... BBC America, if you're listening ... !

If anyone here gets to see it, *please* tell us all about it!

Thanks are due again to Cinephilia for tipping me off to this--I bow to you, O great oracle of all things cinematic ... and literary! :-)

After playing (and winning an Emmy as) the nefarious Falco in Masada, it looks like DW will once again be playing a Roman in the brand-new docudrama, "The Battle for Rome," according to TVNow. (Somehow this slipped by the IMDb! Although it shows up on Michael Sheen's filmography under its British title "The Rise and Fall of an Empire"; he plays Nero. Wish I could figure out who DW plays!) It's a six-part series premiering this Sunday, November 5 (in the U.S.) at 8 p.m. EST on the Discovery Channel--three episodes in a row, and apparently the other three will air the following Sunday (but without either of the aforementioned actors, alas). Unfortunately, the Discovery Channel site is totally unnavigable and almost crashed my computer; otherwise, I'd try to get more info there. But here's a short Yahoo article about the broadcast:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061016/tv_nm/discovery_dc

And IMDb gives episode synopses here:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0867017/episodes

(It looks like they're being shown out of order on Discovery for some reason; it starts off at 8 with the Tiberius Gracchus episode.)

So nobody's playing Caligula, huh? That's too bad since Michael Sheen got some rave reviews for his stage rendition a couple years back; wish I could travel back in time to see that! But then I'm actually reading a book on Caligula right now, and Nero was apparently far more depraved than his infamous uncle, so this could be even more interesting! I just hope DW gets a good role in this one; I wish he was playing Tiberius.

BTW, the six-part Conviction series is being rebroadcast November 8 and 9 on BBC America.

Just going through some piled-up Yahoo alerts and saw this article about the recent Star Trek auction:

http://www.courant.com/features/lifestyle/hc-trekauction.artoct02,0,208550.story?track=rss

"Chancellor Gorkon's necklace - Klingon-style necklace of cast metal with chrome plating. Made for David Warner as Chancellor Gorkon in 'Star Trek VI' and meant to capture 'a refined version of Klingon barbaric splendor,' according to Christie's. $400 to $600."

You mean David Warner didn't get to keep it? ;-) (It was probably the most attractive part of his costume, don't you think?)

I wonder what it ultimately sold for.

Trying to get into the Halloween spirit, I was searching desperately for a good scary movie on cable tonight, then finally gave up and settled on Bravo's "100 Scariest Movie Moments." (Unfortunately, it seems 100 was an overambitious number; it was more like "The 50 Scariest and 50 Most Revolting Movie Moments"!) But I was glad to see "The Omen" come in pretty high--No. 16. Unlike most of the other "winners," they showed *several* scariest moments from "The Omen," including *that one*, naturally. (It seemed slightly ironic to hear Bill Campbell refer to DW as "that guy" after their wrestling scene in "Brisco County Jr."!) "The Omen" was just loaded with memorable scary moments, wasn't it? How come no one ever seems to mention that graveyard scene with the dogs? That scared me much more than the decapitation. (Maybe because I'd already heard too much about it before finally seeing the movie. I remember my best friend from next door coming home after seeing it in 1974, and that's all she could talk about for days! My parents wouldn't let me see it. But after waiting years to see the movie for myself, I wasn't disappointed.)

So what's everybody else's pick for scariest moment in the movie?

BTW, can you believe "The Omen" made it into the first "50 Worst Films of All Time" book??? I agreed with most of their picks, but "The Omen" sure doesn't belong there! It would probably be one of my favorite horror flicks of all time whether David Warner was in it or not. DW is the icing on the cake. (Of course, I can't imagine any other actor in the part now.)

So what's with this remake of the Omen I saw advertised the other night??? Since when does *that* film need to be remade? I thought it was perfect just the way it was--one of the great horror classics of all time. (I'm sick of seeing good movies remade; if they can't improve on the original--and I can't imagine how they could with The Omen--why bother? Instead, I wish they'd just re-release the original on the big screen. But, no, that won't bring in the big bucks, will it?) Anyhow, from the brief trailer I saw, it looks exactly the same as the original but with different actors, right down to the dialog. ("Look Damien, it's all for you!" *ack*) Of course, I was all set to disapprove of anybody they picked to reprise DW's role, but then I saw on the IMDb it was David Thewlis ... Oh, all right, if anybody's worthy to give it a try, I guess it would be him.

What do you all think? If anybody goes to see it (I don't plan to), please let us know how it compares!

Michael Kohlhaas was a movie filmed in West Germany in 1969 starring David Warner in the title role.

I saw it only one time on tv in 1975 (this was, of course, before the advent of vcr's) but it was good enough that I remember it 30 years later.

I have been trying to find a copy on vhs or dvd from any source for several years but I have been unsuccessful.

Subject: BBC's Conviction

Author:
Cinephilia
[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 05:28:48 01/31/06 Tue

It’s going to be hard to tell you about Conviction — an excellent British cop drama airing in six parts on BBC America — without giving away a major piece of its dramatic engine, a horrific scene that occurs near the end of the first episode. But I can safely mention that writer Bill Gallagher shines a stark spotlight on the emotional ramifications of policework experienced by the people doing the investigating — what the pressure of a job built on a perceived duty toward eternal vigilance does to the souls of ordinary, flawed men and women. A viewer’s anxiety while watching Conviction doesn’t necessarily spring from a murderer on the loose, but from the decisions made by those tracking down the culprit. In that respect, it feels like a spiritual descendant of the popularPrime Suspect, but even more so the fantastic U.K. crime series Cracker, which starred Robbie Coltrane as a police psychologist whose all-consuming appetite for the weakness of criminals was matched only by a tornado-like disposition toward his own fractured personal life.

Conviction focuses on a homicide team sent to investigate the multiple-knifing death of a 12-year-old girl whose body is found in a public-housing playground. The slaying galvanizes the community, and as we’re introduced to the detectives entrusted to find the killer, we get more than the standard brush-stroke personalities of most police shows. Ray (Nicholas Gleaves) and Chrissie (William Ash) are brothers with not a little sibling rivalry, sparked by older brother Ray’s having recently been made department head. They and their defense attorney sister Beth (Zoe Henry) are not only on opposite sides of the case — she represents a stammering local pervert named Jason Buliegh (Jason Watkins), who is the investigation’s initial focus — but outside of work they must agree on how to deal with their retired cop father Lenny (David Warner), a once bullish lawman of the beat-the-confession-out-of-them variety who is now suffering from Alzheimer’s.

A key theme in the series is the difference in policing methods between generations. Raven-haired Lucy (Laura Fraser) is intelligent but plagued by doubts about her abilities, and is carrying on an affair with an informant, while her middle-aged partner Robert (Reece Dinsdale) has arrived at an almost Zen-like attitude toward crime-solving, at one point reacting to a detainee’s violent head butt with an unsettling calm: “I pushed too far,” he acknowledges. The show’s most explicit dichotomy, however, is the pairing of Chrissie, who is the young, soft, brooding type — fueled by empathy — with hotheaded veteran Joe (Ian Puleston-Davies), a dedicated family man who doesn’t pass up the chance at his own spirited anniversary party to ball-squeeze his teenage daughter’s boyfriend as a warning gesture. It seems Joe has never gotten over the death of a young girl at the hands of someone he once had in custody, and it eventually leads him to disturbingly blur the line between justice and vengeance. When Chrissie gets caught up in Joe’s private hell, Conviction escalates into something legitimately Dostoyevskian in how it picks away at its characters’ consciences. Adding immeasurably to the tension is a restless — but not Dramamine-restless — camera style from directors Marc Munden and David Richards that feels like a marriage between the handheld urgency of a Law and Order and the psychologically based, time-fragmented editing of an indie film.

The acting is across-the-board wonderful, with Puleston-Davies in particular tapping into an unpredictable explosiveness that makes NYPD Blue’s Andy Sipowicz seem like a schoolyard bully. Special mention, though, must be made of that venerable ghoul David Warner, who ferociously presents Alzheimer’s as the justifiably scary condition it is, the shape-shifter of diseases that can make somebody familiar and alien at the same time. Eschewing the sentimentality one might expect from an earnest TV movie on the subject, Warner understands that you can’t identify with Lenny — brilliantly hinting, also, in some of his more lucid moments that you wouldn’t have been too crazy about him when his mind wasn’t ravaged — so he gives in to the childishness of his rages, the banality of his docile moments, and the maddening vagueness of his more shocking secret-spilling utterances. Warner makes Lenny into a brutal, almost unforgiving metaphor, a glimpse into the potential future of the morally teetering policemen at the story’s center: How many will tragically wind up unable to make sense of their world?

CONVICTION | BBC America | Mondays, 10 p.m.; reruns Tuesdays, 1 a.m.

Subject: New BBC horror film

Author:
cinephilia

Date Posted: 08:30:07 01/04/06 Wed

LONDON: Ray Winstone brings Sweeney Todd, the mythical demon barber of Fleet Street made famous in Stephen Sondheim's 1979 Broadway musical, vividly and scarily to life in a memorable new BBC horror film.

Grim and bloody, the drama makes harrowing viewing as it tells of a seriously demented individual who lives as a respected, soft-spoken and expert barber-surgeon in 18th century London while busily murdering his customers with his straight razor.

Not only that, but he hacks the bodies to pieces and disposes of the larger parts in a church crypt that abuts his shop. The smaller pieces, he gives to his neighbour, Mrs Lovett, to bake in her well-regarded and succulent pies.

Writer Joshua St Johnston has created a believable monster from scraps of fiction about Sweeney Todd that date back to 19th century periodicals. Winstone, who has played some colourful villains in his time, portrays a schizophrenic character whose shy and polite respectability masks the pitiless psychopath that lies within.

Todd's murderous tendencies are unleashed when a cruelly vindictive guard (Anthony O'Donnell) from Newgate Gaol sits in his barber's chair and boasts about his ill treatment of the prisoners. The gaoler's boasts are ill chosen as Todd spent 20 years wrongfully within Newgate's hideous walls, and all the hatred emerges in one slash of his razor.

When Todd falls in love with the attractive but slatternly Mrs. Lovett (Essie Davis), whom he sees being beaten by her husband, it's not long before the bully also meets a bloody death.

Unknowing, Mrs. Lovett responds to Todd's apparent kindness by gifting him with pies. An attempt at seduction, however, reveals the barber as impotent, and she takes a series of lovers who mysteriously turn out to be one-night stands.

It's no coincidence that they have all gone to see Sweeney Todd for a haircut and shave, and Mrs. Lovett is never short of fresh meat for her pies. Out of the blue, Todd's long-lost father (David Bradley) shows up and, having spied upon his son for a few days, unwisely decides on blackmail.

The new police force, known as the Bow Street Runners, also become interested in the disappearances, with young runner Matthew Payne (Tom Hardy) and magistrate Sir John Fielding (David Warner) getting dangerously close to the barber's blade.

Director David Moore and cinematographer Ulf Brantas get the most out of designer Michael Pickwoad's claustrophobic sets that rarely leave the barbershop except to visit the bakery and the crypt.

Davis, Hardy, Bradley and Warner do exceptional work to match that of Winstone, who gets behind the eyes of a madman to reveal hauntingly how he might have become that way.

"Veteran actor DAVID WARNER refuses to write an autobiography of his colourful life, because he hates the thought of meeting fans on the inevitable promotional publicity circus.

The 64-year-old is continually hounded to put pen to paper to discuss his life in movies including STRAW DOGS, THE OMEN and TITANIC, but nothing will entice him to meet his adoring public.

He says, "I've been asked to write my autobiography because I have had a long, eventful career.

"But I have always said no because I can't stand the idea of doing a book signing tour."

He is constantly "hounded" to write his memoirs??? "Hounded"? I didn't know he was Madonna's twin brother... ;-)

"nothing will entice him to meet his adoring public." Not even a million-dollar advance? C'mon Simon & Shuster, Doubleday, Random House, Warner Books!!! This is THE time to bid against each other! I'm sure there would thousands of people, in each city of the tour, just eager to wait a couple of hours in line to get his signature!!!

We fans are so obnoxious... *sigh* I can understand that having to face thousands of Klingon wannabes at Sci-Fi conventions could be living hell. But most of US are normal, polite people who would just take one minute or two of his time.

Mister Warner, please write your memoirs. Just have a no-Klingon-meeting clause put in your contract! We're begging you!!!

David Warner's in a new comedy that's currently in post-production called "Royston Vasey: The Motion Picture" (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0435687/). Yay! But the IMDb doesn't have a name for his character listed; I hope he's got a decent-sized role in it. Unfortunately, as for Ladies in Lavender, there's no US release date listed. David is in 6 episodes of "The Club of Queer Trades", an adaptation of R L Stevenson's stories. The first one was on Monday 4th April. On the BBC website (www.bbc.co.uk) you can look for the programme, and listen to it for one week after transmission. Then, when the next episode goes out, they replace the last recording with the new one.
Happy listening!

Hello there! I am thrilled to see that a DW board still survives. Just in time for Halloween I have a tale of Warneresque terror that only a DW fan could appreciate. (Cue atmospheric mist and possible Christopher Lee voiceover). Some may remember a British comedy program from years ago called The Two Ronnies. I was going to read the autobiography of Ronnie Barker (the big chap with white hair, not Ronnie Corbett, who is lovely), called "It's Hello From Him!" which I thought might be interesting, and after accidentally flipping to page 95, the following tale rather put me off. Those who believe in fate may want a stiff drink afterwards.

Ronnie Barker says "Nicol Williamson, James Bolam, David and I were all in the same dressing room. It was David's first West End engagement, as I recall, and he'd do the most extraordinary things on stage -- wander about, or not move when he was supposed to -- believing that was what he should do at that point. It was a bit off-putting.
We had goes at him: "You really can't suit yourself because the spirit takes you, David. A play is a pre-arranged thing, that's why we have rehearsals." There were frequent arguments about it.
Finally Nicol and I took him on one side. "David, you shouldn't be in this business. It's not going to work for you, you have the wrong temperament, you're just not cut out for it. Maybe if you were a star it might be all right, but...Give it up!"
Three years later he was playing Hamlet at Stratford."

Well, how could I read his book after that. Imagine trying to persuade David Warner to throw in the towel. Imagine all of us bereft of our David Warner. Oh, no, don't. It is too too horrible. Fortunately he must be made of stern stuff and DIDN'T LISTEN TO A WORD. And all the DW fans lived happily ever after. The end.

Hey, is anybody here, or am I just talking to myself? Are you trying to tell me something? (Don't tell me I really am David Warner's only fan!)

I finally got around to watching Shergar last night. I thought it was pretty good--that is, it held my attention, which is saying a lot--although why is it that any movie named after an animal has to be sad--for the animal anyway? Animals in film are kinda like the red-shirt guys in Star Trek (or the blue-shirt guys in Galaxy Quest!). This one's inspired by the true story of a famous race horse who was stolen and ransomed by the IRA in the 1980s.

You wouldn't know it from the cast listing on the IMDb, which matches the film's credits exactly (for some reason they're in alphabetical order instead of the usual "in order of appearance"--even the main human character is at the bottom of the list, and the title character doesn't get a mention at all!), but David Warner has a major supporting role, although he kind of fades out as the movie wears on. (I wish we could have seen his character again after the denouement!) I thought he was really good in it as the conflicted farmer who helps to hide Shergar, but his Irish accent could use a little work. (He sounds convincing at times, but then he keeps forgetting his r's! Unfortunately, I have a thing about accents in movies; if they don't sound real, they just distract me.)

You even have to go the second page of cast credits to see Mickey Rourke's name--who, for all his acclaim, seems completely wasted in the film; not only does his character seem kind of pointless, but his performance as the chief bad guy is completely devoid of enthusiasm. (The main hatchet man, whose character's name I didn't catch so I can't find him in the credits, was much more menacing and believable. I'd like to see more of that actor.) Rourke (his character has the same name) is supposed to have a "Belfast accent," but I guess Mickey wasn't up to the task either; he seems to cover up any shortcomings by muttering. In fact, they could have just used a wooden statue of him instead since he seems to have only one facial expression.

On the other hand, while I was never crazy about him before (25 years later, I'm still scarred by his creepy performance in Alien!), I thought Ian Holm, as a Yeats-spouting ex-hippy tinker, was excellent. How many movies is it that he and David Warner have been in together now, like 10? They didn't have any scenes together in this though.

So who else saw the movie, and what did you think of it?

OK, just one more post, and I'll go away and do something productive! Someone just sent me a link to this site you might find interesting:

http://www.moviemistakes.com/popular.php

Out of 175 mistakes listed for "Titanic," 3 involve David Warner:

http://www.moviemistakes.com/film1299?textsearch=lovejoy

Here's the one I'd been wondering about, though I'd thought it was just my eyes:

"During the break-up of the ship, David Warner's character, Lovejoy, is right where the gash starts. Right after we see the interior break-up shot, we see the hull breaking, and on the top, where Lovejoy should be, he is nowhere to be seen."

Not that I like seeing David in such scenes, but his demise did seem rather anticlimactic. After all his villainy, shouldn't we have seen Lovejoy get his just desserts instead of him just vanishing? (Or, MAYBE ... do you suppose he survived, and there's a sequel in the works???!)

There are tons of other films listed on the site. Just doing a random search off the top of my head, I found listings for Time After Time, The Omen, Time Bandits, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II, Tron, The Man with Two Brains (only one mistake there, wow!) ...

Gee, why don't movie producers hire these eagle-eyes when they're actually making the movies! (Surprisingly, there's also a section on "perfect films," but there aren't many.)

Why no mention in the film history of David Warner's excellent role as a tired and cynical German officer in the Sam Peckinpah film Cross of Iron from 1976? Not the most pleasant of films for sure but a memorable role of David Warner at least in my opinion.

BBC:

David Warner will star as the Doctor in the second of Big Finish's 'alternative Doctors' mini-series of audio dramas: Doctor Who Unbound.

Warner says he was delighted to accept Big Finish's offer to play the part in the story, called Sympathy for the Devil.

"I said yes as soon as I was asked," he admitted during the recording. "The whole fascination is that any actor who's cast brings whatever he has to it. That's the wonderful thing about anybody asked to play Doctor Who, they just bring themselves to it."

The star of such films as Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and Titanic, David Warner, had previously been considered as a successor to Jon Pertwee's Doctor in the Seventies.

Joining David Warner in Sympathy for the Devil is Nicholas Courtney, returning as the Brigadier. In this particular alternate Doctor Who universe, the Brigadier is retired and running a bar in Hong Kong.

"In this story, the Bridagier's rather a failure," confided Nicholas. "He doesn't want to be involved with things. He's not a terribly happy person at this stage."

Nicholas was happy to return to Doctor Who once again. "It's another Doctor to add to my list. How many is that now? I suppose this is number nine!"

Sympathy for the Devi is currently scheduled for release in June 2003.

Lovejoy and Rose? Sounds good to me. I know that Mr.Warner wants to play a hero and "get the girl". I'd very much like to be that girl!! Hell,I'd have been his girl in "Time After Time". That one close-up shot of him was amazing. He has the most beautiful blue eyes. And his voice! It's not just the accent-It's also how deep it is. And I love how he prounounces certain words with his accent. In "Titanic" he should've jumped into a lifeboat and lived. Ismay did. We need to see more of David Warner. Very few actors today have his talent and elegance.

Damn straight it's his talent! He's one of the best actors I've ever seen, and I'm not just saying that because of my infatuation. Also,he's a beautiful man, inside and out. It's rare to find an actor who's not stuck on himself, especially one who is talented. He may not fit Hollywood's standard of beauty, but I like the fact that he's a real person, not a manufactured image. He is attractive in his own way. It must be frustrating to be offered only a certain type of role. We all know he can play a good guy as well. I'm sure I've said this before, but in "Titanic",I thought he was great, and I'd have gladly gone down on the ship with him.I'd just throw my arms around him and hold on tight. Hopefully he'd do the same thing to me!

It was like old times! I was channel flipping until I fell asleep when I happened upon the last half hour of Felony. That was an almost perfect stinker! The only thing that ruined my good mood was, when DW's car is about to crash and for a bit he actually looks frightened for his life. What a shame, to be that good an actor that even a terrible director can't prevent you from affecting the audience! Then Joe Don Baker appeared out of nowhere and things got right back to normal from then on. Has anyone ever hung around for all the closing credits? They list all the product placement companies, I kid you not, including a couple of cigarette and donut producers. I forgot to check who supplied the gum! ;)

Well, I never thought that anything could induce me to watch country music TV, but I was wrong. Caught Desperado, which was pretty good, especially considering that I'd rather watch paint dry than Westerns. He plays the bad guy in the movie. Or, as my extremely snarky husband said, "Oh, which of his roles is he playing a bad guy a**hole or a loser?" I gave him a rude gesture and told him that wasn't fair, DW isn't ALWAYS one of those, I mean he was Chancellor Gorkon, for crying out loud (I get extra geek points for that). I guess he just doesn't get it.

Anyway, I'll open up a new thread to discuss roles in which DW is neither of these. Ante up sympathetic good guys.

Now, DW is on tour in a play by Feydeau, 'Where there's a will', with Elaine Paige and Nicholas Le Prevost(recently in My Fair Lady in London)

See:

http://www.bigfinish.com/drwho/dwu03_sympathyforthedevil.htm

David Warner is the Doctor!

01.05.03: David Warner, who has played well over a hundred roles in film and television, including starring roles in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and Titanic, will star as the Doctor in the second Doctor Who Unbound adventure: Sympathy for the Devil by Jonathan Clements.

David Warner, who had previously been considered as a successor to Jon Pertwee's Doctor in the Seventies, was delighted to accept Big Finish's offer to play the part. 'I said yes as soon as I was asked,' he admitted during the recording of the production. 'The whole fascination is that any actor who's cast brings whatever he has to it. That's the wonderful thing about anybody asked to play Doctor Who, they just bring themselves to it.'

Joining David Warner in Sympathy for the Devil is Nicholas Courtney who reprises his ever-popular role of the Brigadier. In this particular alternate Doctor Who universe, the Brigadier is retired and running a bar in Hong Kong. 'In this story, the Bridagier's rather a failure,' confided Nicholas. 'He doesn't want to be involved with things. He's not a terribly happy person at this stage.' Nicholas was happy to return to Doctor Who once again, 'It's another Doctor to add to my list. How many is that now? I suppose this is number nine!'

Big Finish producers Jason Haigh-Ellery and John Ainsworth were delighted that David Warner accepted the opportunity to play the Doctor. 'Like all the actors to play the Doctor, David brought his own particular qualities and talent to the role and made the part his own - even if it's only for this one story', says Jason.

'Doctor Who Unbound is a great opportunity for us to experiment with the Doctor Who characters and format in a way that simply isn't possible in our regular monthly Doctor Who plays,' says John Ainsworth. 'David Warner is the perfect choice to play the Doctor but not necessarily one that was expected by the fans. I think people will be similarly pleased and surprised with the casting of the remaining four Doctor Who Unbound titles.'

Check out the Sympathy for the Devil for more details of the cast and story and to pre-order the play prior to its June release.

Warner is shunted off to the sidelines or background most of the time. Very disappointing.

I am wondering if a video of DW in Hanzel and Gretel is available. I copied the movie from my TV some time ago for my fairytale-oriented child. Local librarians, etc., love it because it modifies the story just enough to avoid a stepmother who plots to kill the children. (Mom gets really angry and the kids head into the woods while she cools off--and they get lost, etc., etc.) I'd like to purchase an offical copy of the video for our school and public libraries, but it's not exactly one of DW's primo films. I have very little time for the hype and vacuosity of celebrity life, and indeed find the whole preoccupation with
tv/movie people`s lives to be inane, but occasionally there are people who crop up and you think "I would really like to meet them, just to say hello and thanks".
David Warner is a good example of this; I like his method of acting and he`s in alot of things i like--the 39 steps being a good example.
Funny how he doesn`t like computers but willingly does voice overs...........!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, just a voice in the multitude of people saying thanks to DW for the entertainment, and to keep up the unerring ability of being in everything......!!!!!!!!

Did you know that you can have an e-mail reminder sent to you whenever David Warner is going to be on TV the next day? I've been using www.gist.com, and it's great (except that the reminder isn't sent to you till the night before, so if something's on at, say, 3 in the morning, you have to stay up kinda late to see the notice--or at least you do here on the east coast).

First, you have to sign up for the service by giving them your e-mail address. You can customize your listings by adding shows you like; just click on the title, and you should get a description and an option to add it to your listings. It's a little more tricky to add an actor to your preferences unless he's on their current "Top 40"-type list. You first have to find a listing for a show that has the person in it. (This shouldn't be at all difficult with DW! It was a little tougher with a couple of other actors I like. TVNow is a great way to find a listing for a particular actor though because they give you listings for a whole month at a time, whereas Gist's maximum is only a week in advance.) Once you find a listing for your chosen actor, click on the title for a description of the show or movie. Then click on the actor's name, and you should get an option to add the person to your listings. But you're still not done ... *Then* you have to customize your settings and turn on e-mail reminders for the person. Whew! A lot of work, but it'll save you from forgetting to watch something you really wanted to see. Gist only has listings for the U.S. though, as far as I know.

There's a similar service in the U.K.: www.mydigiguide.com, but I'm not sure whether they send you e-mail reminders, etc. I'd be curious to know if any of you tries it!

Hello,
I am a fan of Mr. Warner's voice work. He has voiced many great characters in several cartoons I have enjoyed over the years. I have come to know his voice and the way in which he speaks very well.
That being said I was watching the "Clerks" animated series on dvd the other day and was delighted to hear what I thought was Mr. Warner's voice as series villian Leonardo Leonardo. When I whatched the credits, however the character is said to be voiced by Alec Baldwin. I listened to it again and I still swear that it is Mr. Warner. If it is Alec, I don't want to know how much he had to practice to pull of Mr. Warner's voice and manner of speaking that well. Am I missing something here? Could somebody help me out? Thanks.

Brad

1st time here, I first saw DW in The Omen last week, I was crying my eyes out when he was knocked off in such a gruesome way. I think they should have kept him on the Omen series, he was a very cool character. And then the same week I saw him in Time After Time, and he again got knocked off, and AGAIN I was crying until it hurt. Is there any movie where he doesn't get his butt kicked? >:-(

Great to hear he won the award but I can't find any reference to it on the web, only 2000 awards(!) not even 2001! Where didi you find out he'd won. If you are calling from the U.K. do you know when we can next see him in the theatre or tv? Kind regards, a fellow fanatic

I read that DW won a Theatre World Award for his role in Major Barbara, but I couldn't find any more information on it. Anyone else read or heard about this?

Hello,
I've found this message on http://newz.n3.net :

"Dear readers,
They won't be any news this week because I'll be in Cannes at the Cinema Festival. The director and me will present about 20 minutes of the movie Cortex, starring Christopher Goodman, Mary Ann B. and David Warner. An indie movie that we are proud to perform digitally on a beach of Cannes, Sunday 18th of 2002. I'll be sometimes with the Discreet crew, awaiting that David Lynch visit us as he promised to our french marketing manager, if he can take some few minutes between his interviews and misc works for the Festival. I hope I'll be able to put some rare videos here at Area2-Deck91. See ya on saturday !

The Drama Desk Award nominations were just announced and DW is up for Best Featured Actor in 'Major Barbara'. There are 5 other nominees, the most formidable of which is Frank Langella, but DW richly deserves to win. The awards will be presented May 19.

A while back we were talking about Alan Rickman. In case anyone's interested, Mr. Rickman just opened in a Broadway production of Noel Coward's 'Private Lives'. The show received glowing notices during it's run in London's West End. The Broadway run ends September 8. I'm going on June 30 and can hardly wait :-)!
