I regret to announce the death of that grand old gentleman Francis Rawlinson, the "man from the Halle". He died peacefully in his sleep on the 14th September. Although not known by you all, to all that came in contact with him and got to know him well, he was the true gentleman of music and a wonderful friend to know. I got to know him during my last twenty years or so of Promming and he regularly came down from Manchester, (where he worked in the Halle office),each year for selected concerts and not just for the halle visits. He stayed in Imperial College's accommodation for the few days of his visit and queued from early in the morning for the arena, although he was one of those that liked to sit beside the fountain.
He regularly distributed Halle leaflets to those of us who were Halle fans and loved to keep up with the Test Match score while in the queue.
He would inform me early in the year, the dates when he was "attending" the Proms and order me to "be there". He had a colourful life before I knew him and as an electrical engineer he spent time in India and South Africa. When he worked for the Halle in his later years he started out, (I am told), at 5AM and worked a full days work. He was still working in his late Eighties and up to a year before he died. I have so many lovely stories about him which I will gladly share with anyone who remembers him. His funeral wishes are that we assemble in Dukinfield Crematoriam next Thursday morning the 23rd September at 10am to listen to a programme of recordings of his favourite music which he has selected. If anyone would like further information about his life or indeed his funeral arrangements, please do not hesitate to email me. May He Rest in Peace.
