Well Prom is a contraction of Promenade. The current BBC Proms retains standing areas for the audience, in the original Promenade Concerts, the audience members were also free to walk (promenade) around these areas during the concert (hence the name), so these patrons were called promenaders, they were promenading. Like the name of the concerts themselves, over time these have been contracted to prommers and promming.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Proms and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promenade_concert for more info
