Mr Pollard falls into the usual trap of thinking that moving out of the Arena makes a difference.

It doesn't - the patrons in the seats make just as much noise, may well have the same personal hygene problems he critisises in the Prommers (and in the circle, sit closer together than we stand!), and some those in the Loggia boxes eat, drink and make merry with no regard for the performance.

Sitting in the stalls at the back with the Arena between you and the music certainly gives a good view of what goes on in the Arena - and since it is in line of sight and sound, any movement or cough is liable to be distracting. But it works both ways - in the Arena we can hear every cough, every clink of class and chink of crockery, every pop of a cork, every rustle of sweet papers and every mobile phone. And most of those who fail to turn off their phone for the duration are in the seats.

In any crowd, there will be people who spoil a perfomance for the rest. Lets not fall into the trap of thinking one segment of the audience is any better behaved than another. It isn't.

Martin.
