Interestingly enough, the programme notes compare The Bells with the RVW Sea Symphony, of which Rachmaninov was at the first performance, having performed his 2nd Piano Concerto in the same concert. Rachmaninov seemed to have been so taken with the RVW work - and the programme notes finish with the comment "One may also reflect, as Rachmaninov probably did, that the sea was to an Englishman what bells were to a Russian".
