The LNOP 9th was perhaps not the most sound of choices from a purely musical standpoint, but was perfectly suited for the, shall we say, extramusical considerations of the time and I have no complaints about it. I didn't catch the full rendition the week before.

As for 'Lenny', well... It's worth noting that when orchestras audition new players, the finalists sit in with the orchestra for a few concerts (often in different chairs within the section for rank-and-file players) in order to see how the prospective orchestra member fits in with the style and personality of the section. If they've reached this stage they've proven that they have the technical ability, and it's the nuances that remain to be seen.

With Lenny, I can appreciate his technical abilities (and acknowledge the deficiencies therein as well), but I think the problem lies in the personalities involved. Slatkin and the BBCSO don't gel, and it impedes the ability of either to produce their best work. I've seen Slatkin with the St. Louis Symphony years ago, and can say he clearly had a groove going there, so he *can* shine as a conductor. Maybe an amicable divorce of Slatkin and the BBC would be best for all.
