David's answer seems to have been cut short ...

The BBC Henry Wood Promenade Concerts are a series of concerts of (mostly) classical music that runs every year in London between mid-July and mid-September. As you saw, the second half of the Last Night is a let-your-hair-down party, but the rest of the concerts are serious. They were started over 100 years ago by a man called Henry Wood, and now they are run by the BBC. See www.bbc.co.uk/proms for the official viewpoint. They are called Promenade concerts (Proms for short, and nothing to do with American teenage mating rituals) because some of the tickets are for standing areas - no seats, and stand where you like (provided someone else hasn't got there first). This makes those tickets inexpensive, and therefore popular with people who like to hear a LOT of live classical music, so if that's your taste you get to meet a remarkably nice bunch of people (well, most of them) from a very wide variety of backgrounds, whose only attribute in common is that they have sound ideas about standing for hours on end, night after night, listening to some of the world's best orchestras doing their stuff.
