Apropos the House Band's new conductor, he gave a talk at the National Press Club in Washington last year. At the end he was asked the inevitable 'most embarassing moment' question. His reply was illuminating.

He claims never to have gone on stage with his zip undone, or any similar faux pas. For him, it was conducting an open-air concert in America after having just returned from touring in the UK. He asked the leader what they were playing, and was told the running order, before which they would play the national anthem. So on he went, raised his baton and gave the down-beat of "God Save the Queen" instead of the up-beat of "The Star-Spangled Banner." Much confusion with beat and pace ensued as the band tried to keep with the errant baton. Slatkin is sure that there is very little more embarassing than to screw up conducting your own national anthem.

We shall have to watch out in the second half of the Last Night!
