Thank you for your very kind remarks about my reviews;-)

Having many, many summers ago (over 20 of them) played the Beethoven and Tchaikovsky violin concertos, I fully understand what you are saying. At the time, I can remember my frustration at not getting the right feeling in the music. I can remember my teacher's words. "Concentrate on technique," he would say, "and let the passing years give you feeling." He was right, of course. Although I soon after gave up playing for a life in science (more fool me, I sometimes think, although I wasn't really going to be that good if I am honest), I certainly feel my appreciation for the music I hear has become more profound and intense as the years have passed. Much as one's personal experiences of life inevitably intrude upon composing, they must also impose themselves on one's playing or one's listening.

Youth brings a certain vivacity to playing, witness some of the EUYO performances in recent seasons, but maturity brings experience of life and the world around us - the very things that much of this music is trying to portray.

As for Guy Johnstone, one has to have been bruised to really play the Elgar.
