I was listening to National Public Radio in the car today, and they were discussing the music being requested by people following the events of 11 September. Apparently the top three were:

1) Barber - Adagio for Strings
2) Beethoven - Symphony No.9 'Choral' - finale
3) Mahler - Symphony No.5 - adagietto.

So in terms of trying to capture the mood of the American people, the BBC and Maestro Slatkin would appear to have got it right.

However, they then proceeded to discuss Mahler 10. Between the movements is a section where a bass drum beats very slowly - something Mahler heard when in New York when a funeral procession for a New York Fire Chief passed by his hotel. Just how much more appropriate can one be?
