I was saddened and somewhat taken aback to hear of the sudden and untimely death of Giuseppe Sinopoli, last Friday, during a performance of Verdi's Aida.

After hearing this news it occurred to me that whilst I only saw him once in live performance (Mahler 8 with the RPO at the Albert Hall 2(?3) years back) that I have gradually acquired a number of favourite recordings in which he conducts (mostly stemming from his long association with London's Philharmonia).

A sad and significant loss to the music world, and a very untimely passing in the prime of life at a mere 52.
