Date Posted: 15:59:56 12/10/03 Wed Barrymore cancels comeback 9.24AM BST, 19 Sep 2003 Controversial entertainer Michael Barrymore has pulled out of his comeback show in the West End after just three performances. He made the announcement just minutes before he was due on stage at the Wyndham's Theatre last night. Barrymore told producers he could no longer continue his stand-up routine after a series of critical reviews and poor ticket sales. The 51-year-old had hoped to relaunch his failing career following the death of Stuart Lubbock whose body was found floating in his swimming pool in 2001. Producers of the show, which only began on Monday, have promised refunds to all those fans who have already purchased tickets for the six-week run. In a statement Barrymore said: "Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely apologise to everyone who has bought tickets, but the pressure of the last two years has taken its toll. "I would also like to thank my fans, friends and Alcoholics Anonymous who have all helped me remain sober and given me great support and care." Barrymore's manager Diana Howie said he would now be taking a holiday to decide on the future of his career. But she insisted that he would not be quitting showbusiness. "He will be back with new stuff, but obviously he needs to have a proper break and recover from the pressures of the last few months," she said. She said Barrymore had received a number of offers of work from New Zealand and Australia and that he might go there again before trying once again to win back the hearts of the British public. "He's got interest from all sorts of different fields and it's really a case of doing the right thing for him rather than doing the first thing that is offered," said Ms Howie. "He's not in any rush. He has a lot of offers on the table for different projects and it's really what's going to suit him and his career. "There's a great deal of interest in him down in Australia and New Zealand and yes, that is certainly an area where he has had a lot of offers."
