Subject: Impregnable 1840

The service record of my great-great-grandfather shows he was a Boy 1st Class on HMS Impregnable in 1840, (long before the well-known Training Ship (ex-Howe) was anchored in the Hamoaze at Devonport) and I can find no information about Boys on Impregnable in 1840. I didn't realise that Boys officially existed in 1840!
Can anyone help?
