A loud whinny rang over the hills as a black horse appeared on the horizon. It rose up high on its hind legs, rearing into the wind, challenging the earth and sky.
It was a stallion.
His coat was a silky blue-black. His small, savagely beautiful head was slightly dished and held two fine, well-shaped ears. His eyes, warm and liquid brown, were wide and set wide apart, a sign of intelligence. His head led to a magnificently arched neck and a flowing black mane that blew behind him like tongues of dark flame. Strong, sloping shoulders led to a long barrel and muscular hindquarters. His legs were long, with knees not too high and not too low, a sign of speed. His tail fell behind him like a flowing waterfall. Sharp hooves, trimmed by the rocks he walked upon, were dangerous and formidable weapons.
He shook his head, nostrils flared wide to drink in the wind, and screamed. His call was sharp and piercing, a dominanting cry that only a full-grown stallion could make. It rang of the desert sands and the burning heat of the sun. No, he was not Arabian. He was too large to be pure-blooded. But they did run in his ancestry.
He fell back down onto all four feet and pricked his delicate ears, head and tail erect, to see if he could hear anyone return his call.
