As I see it, coming from a background as a rock musician playing in a rock band, rock is what it is. Soul, R&B, Pop, and all the other kinds of music are good and worthy genres of music. I think we should respect all of the kinds of music other than rock. But that doesn't mean expanding the definition of "rock" to mean anything and everything under the sun.

For example, I like classical music. That includes symphonies, chamber music, concertos, waltzes, string quartets, and all of the many, many kinds of classical music. But that doesn't mean that all classical music is symphonies.

ABBA, Brenda Lee, The Four Tops, Miles Davis and all the hundreds and hundreds of outstanding musicians and artists in the pop music field are worthy of consideration and respect for their talents and accomplishments. BUT THEY AREN'T ROCK ARTISTS. That's not a negative statement, nor is it any sort of disrespect for them. It's just recognizing that rock is rock, and what is something else is something else.

Being "something else" is good! Why can't people accept that?
