--I have been on Lexapro for over a month now, and I noticed when I switched from Zoloft @ 50 mg/day (which my pdoc and i linked to nausea lasting most of the day) that I experienced an increase in my appetite. I took Lexapro once in the past & felt no such increase, I think I lost some weight on it (purposefully, but still, it was attainable etc.). I am almost positive I had no weight gain the first time I was on this medication. Actually, I don't remember any side effects at all, and as I recall a distinct lifting of depression/of my mood (I was being treated for Depression/Seasonal Affective Depressive(?)Disorder/lack of concentration) & was still in recovery for Eating Disorders at this time). I have been through Prozac (2x--the 2nd time it made me feel worse, but I lost my appetite & lost weight on it I guess), Celexa (while dealing with Anorexia--I was appx. 35-40 pds. underweight for my height & frame, very unhealthy, and needed to gain some weight--which I did, but it was a process that involved much therapy and help!). However, I cannot link that (necessary) weight gain to the meds at all because that would not be a fair evaluation of them). Months later I was experiencing depression and they surmised the Celexa's effeciency in my body had "fizzled out" as I am told it does sometimes, and I was switched to Zoloft for the first time. Zoloft for me the first time around was a perpetual nightmare at the time. The first week or so I deemed it as being great and practically sang it's praises (to my mother at least--haha!). I began experiencing more cravings/hunger while on it though, and this was not good for me at the time because it put my thoughts onto ruminating about food all day long instead of focusing on getting better! I felt it a shame since it had boosted my mood so well. I was then put on Prozac for the 2nd time, and shortly thereafter I was put on Lexapro for the first time. I was on it for months when I switched pdocs. He kept me on the Lexapro (20 mg/day) for a while until I began experiencing extreme depression (which has now been accounted to my (ab)use of the rx sleeping med. Ambien, which can actually cause worsening of depression/suicidal thoughts, esp. when used in excess I suppose...). A friend of mine was put on Effexor XR and said he felt a boost in mood shortly after he had started taking it. I inquired about it with my pdoc and I was switched from the Lexapro to that. After a few months on Effexor XR (I had horrible side effects in which i had to be hospitalized for--in order to get off of it rapidly, b/c it you aren't supp. to stop it suddenly--when it was combined with an ADD med for my concentration problem) during the winter. Remembering the boost in mood I had from Zoloft in the past, and having MANY less issues surrounding weight and food, I was switched to Zoloft. It was okay the 2nd time around--ironically, this time I rarely had an appetite at all and was nauseated for much of the day. Of course, this led to ANOTHER switch, this time back to Lexapro. Since I was completely off of the Ambien, I decided to give it another shot. This time I feel it puts me at at least a "mainstay" in mood, but I don't feel particularly gleeful at all times, and I still do get depressed. I am currently on 10 mgs. and feel it needs to be upped to 20 (which I was on the last time), so I guess I'll discuss that with the pdoc...maybe this intense hunger I get now and then will go down with the increase, or maybe it will increase along with the dosage, lol, but we shall see I guess! Good Luck to all, and I do believe Lexapro is a very good drug for combatting depression and would definitely recommend it as a good anti-depressant in the right situations etc.!
