Subject: More stuff to report from Hidden harbour and elsewhere

Hidden harbour today:

4 Common loons (at least 2 were different from the other day as they were in winter plumage...the other 2 were in their full breeding splendor)

18+ Horned grebes--various plumages

These were all on the big lake. There is indeed a small parking area in the NW corner of the big lake. Just take the main entrance off of Angola road (west entrance to the subdivision), and take the 1st left that you can that actually takes you somewhere. Follow this around to its dead-end in a small parking area, and scope the lake from here. Afternoon lighting is the best.

Also, try to be as discreet as possible, as this IS a private subdivision, and I have been shooed away a couple of times.

If you miss the loons on your first pass with the scope, don't give up--these birds are very active divers!

On the east lake at Hidden harbour today were the previously-mentioned squadron of Redhead, a handful of other various ducks, and 3 Horned grebes.

Salisbury quarry held 6 Horned grebes, no loons today.

In the Oak Openings, the field at the corner of Sager and Wilkins at the west end of the airport held Vesper and Savannah sparrows today.

It looks as though the Pine warbler could be in serious jeopardy at Oak Openings, as well as Red-breasted nuthatch (breeders). It sure looks like the park has decided to "manage" some more by whacking much of the pine stands along Girdham road, no doubt for more Oak Savannah. What is bad news for Pine warblers and Red-breasted nuthatches is good news for Red-headed woodpeckers and Summer tanagers.
