In reply to: Ivy wanna be 's message, "UConn has interest in Kaitlyn Chen from Geno" on 18:37:47 04/15/24 Mon

This morning the United States Basketball Writers Association announced that it will name its annual coach of the year award after UConn coach Geno Auriemma, effective upon his retirement, whenever that may be.

That's a nice honor, eh?

I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when Auriemma called Berube to grill her on Chen. Is this how the conversation went?

"It's been seven years since I won my last national championship. [Not counting 2020, when there was no tournament. He does have six Final Fours in that span, so it's not like hasn't been close.] This is getting frustrating. I've got Paige Bueckers and Aziz Fudd for one more year. It's go time. When I take Bueckers out of the game for a rest, how much am I going to lose by putting in Kaitlyn Chen?"

"I love it here in Princeton and I'm thinking about buying a bigger house. In your opinion, should I buy or rent?"

According to the local sports page this morning, Kaitlyn Chen to UConn is a done deal.

Besides UConn being UConn, this is a big deal because Geno only has Paige Bueckers for one more season. He might coach for many more years, but he knows that Bueckers is the kind of player around which national championship teams are built. He's smart enough to know that the world of women's college basketball is getting more competitive all the time. It's no longer just Tennessee he's got to worry about. It's time to win in 2025.

I am quite confident that Auriemma pushed back on Berube very aggressively, "Don't say nice things about Chen because she's your player, Carla. I'm asking you as the man who brought you to Storrs as a fresh-faced seventeen-year-old and decades later got you the Princeton job. Can Kaitlyn Chen help me win a national championship next year or not?"
