Prior to the 2023-24 academic year, if you had been asked to bet your house on any Ivy team in any sport winning a conference title during the year, there's a pretty good chance that you would have picked Columbia baseball or Penn women's lacrosse.

Both teams were returning almost all of a championship roster stacked with all-Ivy talent. The coaches were the same and nothing had shaken up the opponents' viability.

Here we are near the end of the year and Columbia has clinched its title with one full weekend series yet to play. Chalk.

What happened to Penn women's lax? Lost big to both Princeton and Yale during the regular season. But now it's conference tournament time, better known as "the redemption round."

I suspect that Penn will come out of the starting gate angry and hangry. Look for a motivated team which knows it underachieved this season and is looking to put a hurting on somebody.

Further, Penn's upside from a potential Ivy tournament championship is huge. The Quakers have the best win of our conference, at #1 Maryland not too long ago. The Terps are still playing well enough for Penn's win to loom very large if the Quakers make the national field.

Conversely, Ivy-undefeated Yale does not have the big signature out-of-conference victory. The Bulldogs need to win the ILT for a high seed nationally.
