Subject: The difference between a politician and a leader

Megan Griffith embodies a leader, not a politician.

Every bit of what she has to say is truth.

Megan spoke during her press conference, with heart and passion, directly to Selection Committee.

The Committee not only heard her truth, but more importantly, felt it.

Let's say that you're Megan Griffith.

In which situation would you rather be? A #9 seed playing a #8 West Virginia team or a #12 facing another #12 in Vanderbilt?

I mean, sure it's the oft-denigrated play-in game. But at this point in your program's development, I think what you really want is a WIN, any win. Who cares if it's the play-in game? A dub is a dub.

And now you get to play a #12 seed. Jeez, it's like you've been seeded #5 yourself.

And don't put it past Columbia to beat Baylor, either. Every time I see Abbey Hsu on ESPN+, I am more impressed. Princeton won big on Saturday in large part because the Tigers crafted a customized switching strategy revolving around keeping the right defenders on Hsu, independent of the switches on the other four Lions on the floor.

Will Vanderbilt or Baylor game plan the same way without the benefit of having played Abbey Hsu eight times over the last three years, as Princeton has? I doubt it.

Columbia is playing in the “First Four.â€

And while some fan bases may not appreciate the extra travel, few have disparaged it.

I like Columbia to beat Vanderbilt and Princeton to beat West Virginia. And obviously, Columbia has a much better chance of upsetting Baylor than Princeton does of shocking Iowa.

Coach Griffith did the Ivy League a great service.

Columbia will beat Vanderbilt.

They will be in the NCAA tourney and deservedly so.

The Princeton mens team deserve a play in game.
They beat Duquesne on the road at the start of the season.

Duquesne a #11 seed.

Give me a break.

From a professional perspective why would anyone coach IL basketball knowing that you are stuck in a one bid league and you can't get OOC games to elevate your NET.

You are way off on Duquesne- that game happened months ago and I just watched them twice, they are MUCH better than they were in November. They won the A10, a league sending two teams to the Dance and not even their regular season champion, that'll tell you how good the league is. Of more importance, everyone needs to see only 4 at-large bids to teams NOT playing FBS football. Read the tea leaves.

We will see how Duquesne (#80 NET) fares against BYU (#12). Color me extremely doubtful.

In their defense, since they made the NCAA based solely on their A10 tournament win (4th best NET among A10, 6th in conference standings), it's not clear to me how that supports a PU at-large bid notwithstanding PU's far higher NET (#55). Not that NET is entirely reliable, but other teams with better NET that were excluded: St. Johns (#32), Providence (#57), Oklahoma (#46), Indiana State (#29), Pittsburgh (#40). With so many conference tournament upset winners like Duquesne obviously there were just fewer at-large spots available.

I agree the 11th seed is head scratching. Then again, I gather an 11 isn't any different than a 14 or 15.

Dukes won their last eight and ten out of eleven in a much tougher league, top to bottom. Certainly a factor versus losing in your conference semi final.

Finally, Colombia is given their well deserved respect. At first glance this play in game vs. Vanderbilt looks evenly matched. If the Lions get past Vanderbilt then maybe just maybe they’ll become this year’s Cinderella team.

I am sure we all agree with Griffith's fundamental point and support Columbia in this event. But Griffith has made herself a target. While objectively one game doesn't prove or disprove anything, realistically people are judging and it's important for the IL that she succeed in backing up her talk for at least one game if we want to be taken seriously for a second bid down the road.

I am confident that there is a whole host of SEC coaches and conference administrators who will be paying unusually close attention to a Wednesday night play-in game.
