While I do not know the details of this case, the majority of cases where an Ivy student athletes lost a season to Covid and wants a fifth year of eligibility, the student elects to take a semester off to preserve their eligibility.
This tends to work best for Ivy athletes who participate in fall or spring sports. In the case of winter sports, they may need to take a whole year off in order to play both semesters of their fifth year. There are a few cases of basketball players to elected to take a full year off to secure an extra full year. Since Isaiah Gray lost his freshman year and played both semesters his sophomore, junior and senior seasons, he may not have the flexibility to play both semesters.
The majority of Ivy basketball players facing this situation are using the graduate transfer option. The last elite Ivy basketball player who only played one semester was Brian Cusworth in 2006.
