To me, Columbia already earned it. But since the League requires Columbia to play off with three other teams, a separate issue and pet peeve of mine, the rest of the field is not yet set. Princeton sits in second place at 11-7. Given that: our top pitcher from last year, Chmielewski, a first Team All-Ivy, hasn't played all season; our second best pitcher from last year hasn't played in over 3 weeks; in League play we are the worst fielding team; sixth in batting at .255 (hitting has picked up in the last handful of games, but we do lead the League in SO)); and middle of the pack in pitching, this is a pretty good showing...so far. It would be quite a feat to hang on to second place. Our last three games are against Columbia. They lead the League in hitting at a .329 League clip, with 40 HRs in 18 games, and in almost every offensive category. I understand injuries affect every team and Columbia has a pitcher who hasn't played in the League. But, Columbia's roster totals 38 vs. P's 29. The thinness of the P staff was evident to me in the DC series this past weekend. In the third game, with P cruising with a 6 or 7 run lead, DC pulled within 2 in the 8th while Bradley, a very good coach, left the middle reliever in notwithstanding the obvious trouble he was having getting out of the inning. And as an example of how our fielding can be a problem together with staff shortages; our pitcher prolonged one inning by throwing away a ball hit to him. And in DC's 4 run 8th, with our pitcher struggling, our 2B bobbled an inning ending DP ball allowing two more runs to score in the inning. It went as a FC, not an error, but it was a blown DP. Cornell is at 10-8, a game back of P, Penn and Yale at 9-9, H at 8-10. We have the tiebreaker over Penn, but not over Y and H. David Perry, where are you when we need you? After their next three games I am not at all certain P and Columbia will play again this season. I think it is more likely than not that Columbia sweeps P. Whether P qualifies for the playoff turns on how H, Y, and Penn perform as well as the outcome of our series. And if we do make it in, if we aren’t seeded fourth, we need a series win to see you again. I don’t know Boretti’s view of it, but I am hoping he gives some of his regulars a rest for at least one game this weekend, lol. If you look at the Ivy offensive stats, it is across the board dominance by Columbia. ( Brown does have more walks.) so I can’t say even giving a rest to the regulars will yield a different result.

We walked seven straight hitters in a midweek game recently. Obviously the pen blew up vs. Yale most significantly but several other games as well. The fourth game of a double elimination Ivy tournament would be a football score. And not 10-7.

Faulkner goes the rest of the way improbably stilling Columbia bats until the 9th. I kept expecting Columbia to erupt but it never did. Was this the regular Columbia lineup? Given our depleted pitching ranks, now held together by Scotch tape and Elmer’s Glue, and the strength of the Columbia lineup, I assume Columbia will score a more familiar number of runs tomorrow. With this win and Penn’s loss, P is now in the Ivy tournament.

Our offense was poor in game 1 and we deserved to lose despite a decent pitching performance. Our game 2 starter and offense were decent but our middle reliever was terrible and we dodged a bullet to hold on to the win. Game 3 was a different story—tremendous starting pitching, the bullpen held up, and the bats came alive. In his last 2 games Santana pitched if I’m correct 12 scoreless innings and was dominant. If our middle reliever from today’s opener pitches any more this year, we are in trouble. And Hage had a bad three games at the plate, which was a surprise. In any event, Princeton played us tough and is a dangerous team

I don’t know enough about the other play off teams, but Columbia looks solid enough to win with such offensive ability. Bradley is a very good coach. He dealt with adversity on a couple of fronts from Bandura jumping to the pros and injuries to the pitching staff but still managed to field a club to 12-9 in the League. One of Walters’ out of the box hires that worked a long time ago.
