Knowles is a very good defensive minded coach and well respected throughout the Ivy League. The alums have been solidly behind Jim Knowles for his first five seasons at Cornell. Unfortunately after six seasons his best record is 6-4 with the prior coach's recruits back in 2005. This year's team is also loaded with seniors with your two QB's, primary running back, your best lineman, and both receivers set to graduate next spring. So from an offensive perspective, next season doesn't look promising either. Six years is plenty of time to at least get the program competitive. If the team was losing close games and building for the future, then Knowles job is secure. However, we have been blown out of the last four out of five games. We also lost to Princeton, who's season record was worse than Cornell. Since 2005 the team went 5-5,5-5,4-5, and now we're probably looking at 3-5 at best.

If Knowles was coaching at Harvard or Yale, he probably would have been let go after last season. So it's definitely going to be time for a change come December.

Mediocrity has been pretty much the hallmark of Cornell football since the formalization of the Ivy Leage with some exceptions especially under Baughan and Musick. Other Cornell coaches have struggled with recruiting talent to East Hill. Are the recruiting disadvantages that Cornell faces against the Big 3 and Penn too much to overcome?

"Are the recruiting disadvantages that Cornell faces against the Big 3 and Penn too much to overcome?"

Huh? Granted not all sports are equally easy to recruit, and football recruiting is somewhat unique. And yes, while Cornell is a fine institution, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton have greater prestige and more generous aid packages. But look at Cornell's record in track, lacrosse, hockey, wrestling, even basketball lately. It has an advantage versus Harvard, Yale, and Princeton under the Academic Index, and lately has changed its financial aid policies to be more competitive as well.

So Cornell has some disadvantages, but some advantages as well. Its disadvantages against Yale have not prevented it from beating Yale nor have Princeton's advantages enabled it to avoid being blown out by Columbia, or to beat Brown, or possibly anyone else this year.
