This is interesting in that it is not Pete Carril's job, responsibility or even authority to hire his own replacement.

But of course nobody who has spent three decades building one-half of a conference duopoly dynasty is going to just step back and let the program be handed to anybody.

Duke had offered its head coaching job to Tommy Amaker before Mike Krzyzewski picked up the phone to make sure Amaker did not order a moving truck. K had made his own selection of Jon Scheyer and assumed/hoped that his boss would make the same pick. When that didn't happen, Krzyzewski stepped in and forced the issue. His message to Duke, "I've still got an office in the building. Don't think I'm using it to schedule tee times."

For all the issues I have with what Amaker did to academic standards in Ivy basketball recruiting, my heart does break for the man. To be offered the job that you have wanted for decades and have it taken away, that would bring a lesser man to his knees.

No, the way to manage the transition is what Dean Smith did at UNC. Wait until a week before school starts, then quit. That way, you're gonna get your man. You're welcome, Bill Guthridge.

Clarifying my post, he announced his replacement. He did not formally choose him, except insofar as he had earned the deference to have his choice ratified and “chosen” by the AD. When Auriemma retires, he will probably have the same role.
