This fall I expect to a return to normalcy in the context of a 1 loss co -champions. Last year was a rare occurrence of a 2 loss league champion. Another rare occurrence was a tri-champions.

Brown :Wilcox /Rockett (great name for a WR!) Last year in my opinion had the best passing and receiving combo ( in New England- including the NFL! Bears goal should become the next Columbia in the context as consistent winners. First step is to get that “elusive” sixth win. One to watch : their QB(s) since Brown didn’t have a spring game they at this point are a enigma.

Columbia last year was the most bizarre team the I’ve seen in the Ivy . Their offense looked like it was only alive by the aid of a ventilator. Their defense was reminiscent of the early 2000’s Tampa Bay and Baltimore. Most of 2023 the Lions were #2 in the nation for scoring defense averaging around 8 ppg! RB Joey Giorgi was good but not good enough to carry the offense. Towards the end of the season their world class defense gave up 35 and 38 points in Harvard and Yale. What that a sign of their opponents figuring out this potent defense ? Dose this point to the defense buckling due to no help from their coma- like offense? This fall is is the most intriguing team due to the uncertainty of offense, defense, sizable roster turnover and a new coach.

Cornell is getting much needed change by bring in a new coach. Last year the Big Red had a versatile offense by using the spread, I-form and goalie T-form. Their offense distributed the ball evenly among 4 RB’s and 6 WR’s lead by the dynamic QB Wang. My opinion they in the same goals as Brown by becoming regular winners starting with a six win season. One to watch : Ed Marinaro . He was a touted as a spectacular dual threat HS QB. His first two years he was listed as a RB and last year the was listed as a WR. This is his senior season will he get on the field? This is perplexing that it hasn’t happened for him because Cornell rotates WR’s , RB’s and KR’s in and out like hockey players.

Dartmouth should be good for 6-7 wins and 2 league losses. Unlike last year two conference losses won’t be good enough for a championship season. Ones to watch : QB Jackson Proctor isn’t the power featured runner as Nick Howard not dose he have the rocket arm of Derek Kyler but he’s a great blend of the both. Ahmir Braxton is the other two watch for one obvious reason.

Harvard’s selection for a new coach is confusing- especially when Chip Kelly was interested in the job. For a few years I’ve been critical of Harvard spoiling their success. When I withdrew from Penn and between colleges I took some under grad open enrollment courses from their extinction program, nothing personal. Last year they finally stopped sabotaging themselves. This year Harvard faithful may be watching Andrew Aurich with curious distain. Ones to watch: QB’s Charles DePrima and Jayden Craig. Will Harvard stick with the two QB format or Will one emerge?

Penn overachieved in 2022 and got Back to their unfortunate “normal “ last year. After a year and a half a featured RB Hosley and key WR Richardson emerged. I expect more of the same: 5-6 wins using QB Sayin’s “ strengths” short 5 yard Slant and dig routes and their stringent Defensive Line.Richardson is capable of oping up the passing game but not convinced Sayin is capable. Quakers should mark their calendar for the Brown game because the past two years they’ve eliminated them from the title race. Ones to watch: QB Liam O’Brien. He was effective as a goal line QB. But who is he? Is the the next Alek Torgersen or Ryan Glover?

Princeton’s offense was bizarre last season. They look like their typical self . Playing physical even in the 4 WR Shotgun. Just like Columbia their stout defense carried them. Fortunately for the Tigers the offense did barely enough to help the defense. I expect the offense to return to normal and win a share of the championship. The Penn is a key game due to the wild finishes the last two seasons.

Yale will be without the all and everything QB Nolan Grooms. If this was the other 7 teams I’d expect them to go from a championship season to 3-4 wins. But I’ve seen too many times Yale staring slow in September and October. Then in November they kick into high gear and win the title, It expect it again.
One to watch: Nolan Grooms replacement.

Has there ever been a time when the Ivy had three first time coaches simultaneously?

Dose anyone have any update on Coach Bags health ? If he recovers will this Ivy “ Lord of the Rings “ return for a trilogy?

Ivy Sprint Football

Cornell saw their coach Terry Cullen retire. He had coached the team since 1964 and up until 2022 Coach 75% of the programs games! Last year they went winless for the first time since 1949! On the positive side few noticed or cared. I look for them to get a win this season.

Penn Sprint is in the same state as the conventional football. They’ve lost their long time coach and dynamic QB. As a result there’re no longer championship contenders but are at the middle of the pack. I expect the same in 2024.

I think but not entirely sure they competitiveness in the Ivy will continue as it has since 2022. I enjoyed watching the game’s knowing a “bottom feeder” had a punchers chance of knocking out a “heavyweight “. For know I wait for the great Jack Ford to speak with the coaches to see what they have to say about the 2024 season.

True, Proctor is not the force that Howard was on third-and-one situations. But he's super fast and got some big gains for us by taking off when nobody was open.

And his passing accuracy improved as the season went on. There is a reason why Paxton Scott had to be placed on suicide watch on the Dartmouth sideline after he dropped that bomb late in the fourth quarter against Princeton--the pass could not have been any more perfectly thrown (and it was thrown by Proctor).
