That was a great college football game. Talented players, lots of athletic plays, a few terrible errors, drama galore. I don't need anything more from a spectator sports event.

I've said here many times. For an excellent spectator sports event, you only need two relatively matched teams which take the game very seriously. You absolutely do not need the very best athletes in the country or the world.

Watching my local high school team on Friday nights or Thanksgiving morning is as good or better than going to an NFL game or even an Ivy event.

There's a lesson here as the Ivy League drifts inconsistently into the world of NIL and the transfer portal:

We do not need to get better athletically to provide a terrific experience for fans and players.

As long as we can remain mostly internally well matched, the product on the field or the court will be entertaining. The players will graduate and go on to success in their chosen fields, just as they have for a century. And our standards for competition are actually improving. For half a century, Penn and Princeton ruled over Ivy League men's basketball. The competition now is much tighter.

Yale played Montana State better than any playoff opponent short of Illinois State. The product on the field is plenty good enough. Every few years, we'll produce one of our better champions and that squad will be a threat to make the Final Four or maybe the championship. That's enough.

Leave the big money to the insecure boosters at Texas Tech and Texas A&M. We're good enough now.

I fully accept that the tide may lift many other boats and this state of affairs will need to be revisited again and again. But for now, I hope that we can resist the siren call of chasing the NIL/transfer dream. It's no panacea.

Just to add to the list, would to add another game to the schedule and to start the season 2 weeks earlier. There is no reason to start 3 weeks later than everyone else.
